This one is hard to find! It's bigger than the others and very colorful. My 6 year old grandson just loves it. Again it comes with a code and then the kids can go on the educational free Webkinz site. Grown-ups can play along. This one was more expensive, but very nice.

You can not see it but this guy has glitter spots on his belly. Nothing too bright or outstanding but enough to give him some jazz. These guys are well made. They use the most interesting materials to make the animals.

You also get a code for the website which is kind of like Neopets but better. My niece and my daughter both have a great time playing online and in real life with their furry friends. They each have this guy plus two others.

I got this furry friend in February 2006. Simply adorable! it was my first webkinz i ever had in my life, and i had lots of fun with it! the website is well done and well put-together and VERY educational! They also put advertisements(Not those ads that are viruses, its ads that the website makes) reminding you to eat veggies and fruits, get outside and play and brush your teeth! Its an amazing toy!

This is a very cute dog and made well. For the price it is a tad smallish? But is perfect size for a kid to carry around without knocking down everything she comes into contact with. His face is too adorable with the folds like a real basset hound around the eyes. The picture does not do it justice. My daughter received this for her birthday and really loves him. The website is fun and has plenty of games for kids to earn cash so they can take care of their "pet". I can see why it is so popular and why the stuffed animals are so expensive. But the look on my daughter's face when she got "Barky" was priceless.

Whimsy Dragon!!! by .. Basset Hound! ()
I have been waiting for the Whimsy Dragon to come out since I first heard about it. Now I have it and it is one of my favorite Webkinz that I own.

However, there were 3 things about the Whimsy Dragon that made me disappointed:

1: It's smaller than it looks.

2: When you register it on to your account and you go to your room, when it walks around, you will notice it doesn't fly! It just walks. I kept thinking that it would fly around your room, but it doesn't.

3: The price. It is NOT worth $30. I bought mine for $15. Save your money, and buy it somewhere else.

I still think the Whimsy Dragon is a cool Webkinz!

I bought this for an 11 year old that I nanny for. Webkinz does a good of integrating huggable plush toys and getting kids more comfortable with internet and cyber-world usage. Which...could be a good or bad thing. The manatee is really soft and probably one of the cutest Webkinz i've come across. Its durable and fun to carry around on our adventures, while still providing an extra level of entertainment via web adventures.

I purchased the Webkinz Large Fantail Goldfish as a birthday gift for our child who had specifically asked for it as a gift and was THRILLED to have received it. The Webkinz Goldfish was in perfect condition when it arrived, and was packaged nicely. We (my husband and I) were surprised to see that it arrived so soon after ordering it.

The only issue we had was not with the Webkinz Goldfish that we received. The "problem" was that my husband's mom purchased one also as a gift and forgot to tell us!!! Two of the Goldfish gave our child double the joy.

What a great positive, learning experience for my child on the computer! He is learning the value of money, eating/sleeping habits and much more. In a day where violence is so prevalent and difficult to steer a 7 year old boy from, it is refreshing to have him so involved in such a great outlet.

I think the Webkinz toys are wonderful tools for internet learning that's based on a strong work ethic and teaching the concept to children that everything in life is worth working for. So many of their internet sites are just blatant ads for products and tv shows with no real learning involved. It also teaches nurturing to children which is something you can't just tell them to do. They take great pride in clothing and sheltering their "web children".

Just a great idea.

I recently got to spend some time with my 7-year old niece and watched her "wax lyrical" about how much she loves her Webkinz (she has three of them!). She took me over to the computer and showed me how the computer part works with the beagle Webkinz she named "Sam". I watched her zip around the computer playing all sorts of games to "make money" to pay for the food, clothes, and treats for her "pet".

The game teaches kids some of the responsibilities of having a pet (like making sure they get fed, taking them for a walk, spending time playing with them, etc.) while teaching computer skills at the same time. The carnival-like environment where they play games to make money for their pet is fun and provides enough variety to keep them coming back day after day.

I'd highly recommend Webkinz for any child who loves toy animals and wants to gain further experience on the computer.

For the past few weeks, my daughter has been trying to go into "My Home" but every time without fail she gets logged out and gets the message "Try again later". We've tried it at different times of the day to no avail. Total waste! When you try to look for an email or phone number for tech support, you find none. Tech support is nonexistent. My other daughter is able to do everything with her Webkinz so I don't know what's going on with this one.

I am nine and I got the webkinz polar bear for Christmas from my Aunt. If you get this webkinz pet at Christmas then do not expect it to work right away because a lot of people are trying to sign in for the first time. You get to name your pet and make it a girl or a boy. When you are done you can play fun online games and earn money to buy furniture and lots of other stuff too.

PS. if you are making a complant about it not being able to load then get comcast!!!

Webkinz is a great website! It has tons of fun games, lots of room theme options, clothes for your pet, and suprises around every corner. This is coming from a 10 year old! I have four- a Lil' Kinz Panda named Lola, a Polar Bear named Ava, a Pig names Lucy, and a Black Cat named Midnight. I would recommend this sight for anyone ages 4 and up! I know a lot of adults who play with their kids' Webkinz, too. I must warn you it is a very addictive website, though, but overall FUN! The animals are really cute. I have had two friends whose Webkinz (a Googles and a Cocker Spaniel or Golden Retriever) had a small hole in it when they played with it for a while, but they are quite easy to repair. None of mine have had any damages and they seem to have very nice quality. Webkinz Rock!!!!

My six year old daughter got this as a gift from me. She is a stuffed animal fanatic and loved the cat and how soft it is. Once I explained the whole online play thing she was really excited. Setting everything up was easy and she was playing in minutes. Online she loves to play the games and travel to each of the different areas. You win little coins when you play the games and you can use them to shop for your pet. She loves winning the coins and then buying furniture and clothes for her cat. It is really an adorable cat and idea. While the subscription online is only for a year I will be willing to renew or buy a new pet. It is so much fun for her.

My 6-year-old daughter loves the littlest pet shop toys and this is by far her most favorite item. She gets to go online and play in a virtual world with her pet. This is a very cute toy, and my granddaughter loves it. I would be careful, however, on giving it to a child who is too young. The eyes could come out and be a choke hazard. This product was bought for my 4 yr old daughter as an Easter gift. She absolutely LOVES playing with it - both online at [...] and here at home in person. She takes it every where and back again.

It's super soft and plushy. Great to cuddle with or stuff in a backpack on the way out the door.

Given the chance, I would buy this product again. I'd also recommend it to others. Infact, I've also purchased other products within the webkinz line and have not had any issues with any of them.

This is my 6 year olds favorite Webkinz. I only wish it were machine washable. He totes it around everywhere and after only having it for a few days it's looking very grungy. It is super soft and very adorable.

My daughter has spent a few hours playing with this toy. It gets dirty a bit easily because it is white. The ansence of arms and/or legs makes it so she cannot dress up this animal the way she can her other Webkinz. The educational value comes from the video link to the games on the Internet. (Without computer access, the educational value disappears.) Because of the limitations of the physical version of this toy, my daughter actually enjoys playing with its virtual counterpart more.

My kiddos love Webkins and my older daughter has been able to play and add her new pets without any problems, but my youngest daughter has had nothing but problems. She couldn't log in, then when she finally was able to she got a message saying that the secret code of her brand new webkin had already been used, then the next time the new pet did show up but she hadn't been able to complete the adoption, and now she can't get into "my room" at all. This has happened with all 3 of her new Webkinz. I have followed the instructions and sent polite and thorough explanations through the poorly designed customer service links provided on the website and so far have only received canned responses saying that someone will get back to me in 1-3 days. My emails were sent 4 days ago. Great idea, great product, but these problems and the unprecedented poor level of customer service give this toy a poor review. I hope they are able to fix their problems and if the can't, I hope someone comes along and does it better.

After reading the Hero and the Crown I think my expectations of this book were very high. I was disappointed that it didnt capture my heart as the first one did. But over all I think it was a good book and I enjoyed it.

Miss Harry
This book is on my very top top top list of favorite books. Most definitely my favorite of all of Robin Mckinley's books. I think the only reason she puts chapters in her stories is so you know where to breath or when to go to the bathroom. This one is certainly hard to leave on the table, especially if you have a love for horse flesh and the truest of loves.

This is a classic. This has got to be my favourite by Robin McKinley. It starts with a similar setting as victorian England in a desert. Orphaned Harry is in a new land. When the magic, secretive hillfolk come to visit with their amazing horses the adventures begin. This book starts out slow but is well worth it. There is a prequel called The Hero and the Crown.

I loved the Goose Girl, for the well planned out characters, vivid imagery, smooth flow, and the continued suspense. This book had me hooked from the very beginning.

Ani was born a princess and was taught by her aunt to speak to swans. Her mother, the queen, found her to be a strange girl, who was awkward and uncomfortable with people. Her mother kept Ani inside the castle, so she could not talk to the birds and swans. Ani was not even allowed to associate with her own brother and sisters. She found solace in riding her horse, Falada, with whom she could communicate. She also enjoyed her best friend and lady in waiting, Selia. Selia had the gift of `people speaking', where Ani was best understood by the creatures.

The Queen Mother prepared Ani's brother for the throne. When confronted, she told Ani that she had prearranged her marriage to the prince of a far away kingdom.

Ani's lady in waiting schemed to take away the throne, marry the prince and kill Ani, along with all of her gurards. Ani, who had never before left the castle grounds, escaped with her life. She was exiled to live as a goose girl, taking care of the kings geese, while her lady in waiting lived as royalty.

Ani needed to disguise herself, and find allies to help regain her royal heritage and over throw the imposter, Selia.

There are bloody scenes, so the story would not be appropriate for younger children. This book will be delightful for the 6th to 9th grade level.

I highly recommend the Goose Girl and look forward to reading other books by Shannon Hale.

Princess Ani is betrayed by her handmaiden and ends up taking refuge as a Goose Girl. There is a cute little love story put in. This is simply a cute, wonderful, fantastic feel-good book and I loved it. There are two sequels that are good, but not quite as good.

Gr. 6-10. She can whisper to horses and communicate with birds, but the crown princess Ani has a difficult time finding her place in the royal family and measuring up to her imperial mother. When she is shipped off to a neighboring kingdom as a bride, her scheming entourage mounts a bloody mutiny to replace her with a jealous lady-in-waiting, Selia, and to allow an inner circle of guards more power in the new land. Barely escaping with her life, Ani disguises herself as a goose girl and wanders on the royal estate. Does she have the pluck to reclaim her rightful place? Get ready for a fine adventure tale full of danger, suspense, surprising twists, and a satisfying conclusion. The engaging plot can certainly carry the tale, but Hale's likable, introspective heroine makes this also a book about courage and justice in the face of overwhelming odds. The richly rendered, medieval folkloric setting adds to the charm. Anne O'Malley

This product was bought for my 14 yr old daughter as an Easter gift. After seeing that her sister had a bunch and playing on her sisters webkinz account, she just had to have one too. She enjoys playing with it online at [...]. For the most part, the acutal Duck just sits on her bed unless her younger siblings get a hold of it - which is quite often.

It's super soft and plushy. Great to cuddle with or stuff in a backpack on the way out the door.

Given the chance, I would buy this product again. I'd also recommend it to others. Infact, I've also purchased other products within the webkinz line and have not had any issues with any of them.

Then she leaves her home and realizes she is more than good with animals; she has magic. Her magic allows her to talk to them and they obey her. Her magic is about to run away with her when her new job sets her in the company of a kind mage named Numair. Numair helps her learn how to control and use her magic.
My favorite part was when all the birds in the story help Daine fight off several Stormwings. Even though they all die, Daine's powers seep out and bring the birds back to life, fix broken wings, and heal their wounds. This book would be great for anyone in to fantasy and fiction books, more for someone in 6th too 8th grade. I don't really know, older groups of people might like it as well. I give this book a 10 on a scale of 1:10.
This book has sparked my imagination. I am always thinking about how life would be if we had magical powers. This book is very entertaning and keeps the adventure going. I hope you read the other books in the Immortals series. This book captivated me. I hope you enjoy/ enjoyed it as much as I have.

I had never heard of webkinz till late '07.We moved just before the start of the 07-08 school year and several of the kids there had webkinz.So of course my kids had to have one too.Well, they are really cool and a great learning tool.They come with a secret code and you register it online at webkinz world.You get to name it and print an adoption certificate.Online they do things to collect "kinzcash" they get to purchase things for their pet's room.They also have to feed it.If they dont it gets sick and it has to see the doctor.I just think they r great.It helps the kids understand there are needs that come before what they want.

And this was a fabulous seller too.I'm sometimes leery of ordering from 3rd party sellers but "angieskidzone" is topnotch.

My 7-year-old son has the Husky, the Yellow Lab, the Brown Arabian, and the Raccoon in his Webkinz collection. The raccoon is by far the cutest, and he is also the smartest in the online "school." He named his Risky, and has had way more fun than I ever imagined he would with a stuffed animal. We haven't had any of the problems with the Webkinz website that others have mentioned. In fact, it has worked like a charm and is easy for my 7-year-old to manage with very little assistance. These toys are Champion, the raccoon especially.

This racoon webkinz is the best there is! The racoon is the most unique and it is the cutest and softest as well! If you are webkinz lovers like me you should really get this one because they are cute and fun!! They are also educational, because they have fun thinking games in the arcade. Those who have been to the Webkinz site know that this Yellow Lab is retired. Those who don't know exactly what a webkinz is.... it's an educational website by Ganz for children (and even some adults) to play and interact with your little pet. The pet comes with a tag that allows you access to the website. You get to play educational games and earn "kinzcash" which allows you to purchase items to decorate a room for your little pet and food to feed it. All in all this webkinz is very durable and ultra plush.

I got the Webkinz Yellow Lab with my birthday money. It is very durable, fun and you can adopt it on an educational website. it comes with a tag that has a code in it that you put in on the site to adopt your virtual pet. after that you can buy rooms for your pet and earn money that you can spend on your pet. We've purchased other products(Bebratz, munchiz, and Barbie)with on-line websites and have disappointed. Those sites can be slow, difficult to navigate, or limited in their content. The webkinz site is fun and educational for my 10 year old girl. She says she has learned more about science playing the quizzy corner.

Her webkinz is very cute and she plays with it off-line more than her other stuffed animals. Overall a great value and we will probably buy more webkinz.

This is a nice toy. It is a very cute collie dog and is even more cute online.

All Webkinz come with a tag. Inside the tag there is a code that lets you into Webkinz World. Be careful though! If you lose the tag, you will not be able to access Webkinz World. You will need the tag if you ever need to change your password too, so don't throw it away after making your Webkinz account.

When you make your webkinz account, you will be greeted by a computer character named Ms. Birdy. She will lead you through the steps of adopting your webkinz, like creating a name for your webkinz pet, a username, the gender of your pet, and other steps like that. Don't worry about remembering your secret code because all you need to do is enter your username and password. Remember that your username is different than your pet's name.

When you are through the process of adopting your pet, you will be in your room. There you can see your pet walk around. You can also decorate your room. You can buy a room by pressing the map button in the upper left corner. There is a small room, a medium room, a large room, and a outdoor room. In the outdoor room you can buy seed packets and garden daily, you can place furniture in the outdoor room, but only certain items. House items you can't put in the outdoor rooms, and vice versa. There are some items that you can put inside and outside.

When you adopt a pet, you will start off with 2000 kinzcash. Kinzcash is what you use to buy furniture, food, games, decorations and more. You can earn kinzcash by playing games in the arcade and tournament arena. You can also get kinzcash by selling things.

Playing games is a good way to earn kinzcash. You can play games in the arcade, and the tournament arena. In the arcade there are lots of games. In the tournament arena, you play against real players. See below about kinzchat and friends. Anyway there are lots of other different games in the tournament arena. Some games in the tournament arena are not multi-player.

In the clubhouse you can make friends and chat with different people. Be aware that these are real people. With kinzchat, there are pre-made sentences that you use so there are no inappropriate words used. There are also no numbers, so personal information such as addresses and phone numbers can not be shared. You can also make friends. With friends you can invite them over to to your house and invite them to play multiplayer games with you.

You have to feed your pet, and keep it happy and healthy. Webinz CAN NOT die, but can get sick. When they get sick you have to bring it to Dr. Quack's Clinic. You might also want to bring your pet when it's not sick so your pet can have a checkup.

There are 2 places to shop. At the W-Shop you can find everything, and sometimes things are on sale. There is also the Curio Shop where you might find rare items. Arte Fact greets you at the Curio Shop. You can also do a gem hunt daily. If you get all 30 gems you get a Crown of Wonder.

There are some daily things you can do, like The Wishing Well 2 and the Wheel of WOW. Also you can do a gem hunt ( see above ), do a job at the Employment Office, do a daily care award, and garden.

There are a few other things I should mention. Quizzy's is a educational quiz corner with lots of questions for all ages. It is the fastest way to earn kinzcash. When you log in you will always arrive at the newspaper. The newspaper changes every week usually on Wednesday, and Thursday. Sometimes the front cover story changes more often to announce important things.

Sometimes there is a glitch in the site when the site is busy. You can have better luck getting on in the afternoon or morning. Weekends and evenings are VERY busy.

I really hope this helps you decide if you would like a Webkinz.

Our oldest wants a real dog, so was excited about the collie. We had no problems setting it up on the computer because we already had an account. Be careful though when setting up an account. Our 7 year old was extremely dissappointed when something went wrong with the set-up and there is no way to fix it, so we were never able to get our very first webkinz on the computer to play with it. That is a flaw in their system. Also you should be aware that the computer game access is only free for one year, then a parent must pay a subscription fee for the child to continue playing online!(This is not disclosed when you buy the toy, only after). All in all the kids love webkinz.

Twix (my collie's name) was a big surprise to me. But I instantly fell in love with it and play with it to this day. Although the hair can be a bit irritating since it is so stringy, you constantly have to brush it to make it look good. Oh, and if you ever want to wash it, DO NOT put it in the washer and dryer. All it does is poof up the hair and it refuses to go back to normal. But a great toy none the less and a great pet for young ones!

Great webkinz and fun site but pitiful responses by .. ()
I like webkinz but my favorite is the turtle. It's a great and safe website but it isn't very educational. About the only thing that really is sort of educational is the Question Corner. You answer questions in different catigories like Math and Social Studies. The Ganz site is very alike to Tamagotchis, Club Penguin, ect. The website claims that they have a "fun educational site for kids" which is true, but not so "educationl". As a typical 10 year old, I do not play with the plush toy. Many young children do though.

The games are pretty fun but if you are a pretty experienced gameplayer, you can tell that they are very alike but the names are different and story. Not to brag, but I am a very experienced game player for a 10-year-old boy. I have seen a lot of games on webkinz that are alike from other game sites.

The typical webkinz is at a ridculous price around 13.00. I am being raised by a froogle mother, so that's just me. Lot's of people would agree with that statement though. Amazon is weird because some are more than others, but the game is really the same. The only difference is the little animal and the "pet exclusive item" and the "pet food". These animated items HARDLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

My cousin and his friend also wrote a review saying basicly the same thing. The responses are terrible saying things like " We will do what we can to fix your problem." . They said something like that to my cousin and was angry.

I really can't say enough about the Webkinz. Both of kids (boy 5 & girl 10) really enjoy playing with their animals. First of all, the husky is very cute, and my five year old boy is in love with it, and the idea of selling cute stuffed animals that have a second life in a web world for kids is brilliant. But, know what you are getting into when you by one of these.

First, you'll of course have to get the pet "adopted" on the Webkinz web site. Then, you'll have to study the online user manual for the Webkinz web site because unless your child has a certain reading ability, maybe fourth grade, they won't be able to read it all by themselves.

Then of course, you'll have to teach your child what you learned. You might be with your child for a few hours at this site while you both learn your way around. With a five year old it is going to take a while. Of course, you may view it as a bonding experience, so it's not all bad, but there is a time commitment you make when you get one of these.

Then, you'll have to cope with the technical glitches at the Webkinz web site. My ordeal was in getting my son's Webkinz husky to send messages and gifts to another Webkinz husky owned by my son's best friend of the same age. The site has a "post office" where you can send letters and "gifts" to a friend on your "friend list", but they don't tell you on the site how to get a friend on the friend list, so I had to do research out on the Internet to see how this is done.

Once we had mastered that, we found that the mailbox doesn't update with new messages unless you log out of the Webkinz site and log back in again.

Some of the navigation controls on the Webkinz site are very narrow and hard for very young children to master because they require a lot of mouse precision. You may end up sitting with your child at the computer getting them through some of the things they want to do.

Finally, your pet's life is one year on the site unless you buy more Webkinz toys or buy a renewal of your pet at the end of one year. They want to hook you into spending more money. I'm glad these cute little things don't cost too much.

So, now you have an idea of what you are committing to when you buy one of these toys. Good luck!

webkinz is awesome and i like it better than club penguin and i played that all the time for months. i like webkinz better because it has alot more stuff to do, plus you get to see many kinds of animals. you get to name your pet and my husky is named spike. i also got a black lab and named him mike. many of my friends are playing webkinz now and we interact online by giving each other presents and sending letters. i have never had a bad experience on webkinz and i have just turned 7. i like playing polar plunge the best. my parents kinda like it too--it sure keeps me busy and happy. i sleep with my webkinz and want a real husky when i grow up.

Our Pug had eaten the poor huskies eyes right off the Webkinz! We were all sad-but I ran the husky through the washer and dryer and he came out fluffier and we can hardly notice they're gone-I cant even see holes in it-these Webkinz are great quality-we have alot of them-I have to wash our plushies because of asthma and allergies in the house and they always come out looking better than when they go in the laundry!

Although lately we have found that many of our Webkinz animals come with small holes in the seams (presumably due to missed edges due to fast sewing) they are easy to fix. Webkinz is a very fun program, and they often update features to keep it interesting. Pricey, but addictive fun for kids AND grown ups.

My neice loves to use the computer with the features this toy provides. She also likes the design of this stuffed animal. I think it's great that this toy inspires kids to get comfortable using the computer, which is an obviously important skill they will use their whole life. The kids get excited creating environments for the toys online and have fun choosing items that match the animal. She's using a snowflake theme for this one's online "room".

The only complaint she has is that sometimes it takes a while to get on the site but that could be for a variety of reasons. Overall she is very happy with the Webkinz products.

Eclipse (my panda's name) is very soft and very cute. The only thing I have against it is the big stomach which I often refer to as: jelly belly. This elephant is going to be June's Pet of the Month, which gets you extra prizes when you adopt it online. I've just received my Amazon order of 3 Webkinz, with codes intact, so I'm sure they're fine. Although our local store that sells Webkinz usually has Pet of the Month cheaper, and with free trading cards.

My 6 year old twins love doing the online games, and I am very pleased with the educational value of the Quizzy's Corner question series. It has a multitude of topics, organized by age. They are also learning a bit of math as they shop, winning virtual cash and spending it.

I enjoy the games as well, and no longer have the urge to purchase a gaming system. This online arcade meets our entertainment needs, without any additional hardware required. Plus, the toy animals are cute, and get played with too.

The book Twilight by Stephanie Meyer is probably one of the greatest most compelling books for people of all ages. When I read this book it literally took me 2 days to read all the way through it and my family had a hard time getting me to put it down. In the book Twilight a girl name Bella Swan falls in love with a vampire. I believe that this novel is the new Romeo and Juliet because it deals with a forbidden love. This book is so captivating and it will leave you wanting more. This book is most definitely one of my favorite books of all time and I think that the author does an awesome job of developing the characters and portraying their feelings which I really loved. If I had to rate this book I would give it 5 out of 5 stars because it was suspenseful and dramatic and it made me fall in love with the characters.

I'm usually not big on vampires, but this is a classic. Bella moves to rural forks and is the new kid in school. She meets a strange guy named Edward who is absolutely gorgeous. She soon discovers that he is a vampire. There are three more books in the series. The last one comes out in August.

As addictive as Harry Potter
I saw a couple sig lines for this book and the upcoming movie on a forum I'm on, so I thought "Hmmm, a vampire love story, why not?" (I'm a sucker for vampire love stories). I have to say, I haven't been as addicted to a book since the Harry Potter series. I kept saying "Just one more chapter," even though the chapter was 30 pages and it was 11:30 PM. I didn't want to put this book down, and finished it in two weekends. I highly recommend this book, and plan on going right out and buying the rest of the books in the series.

A fun beginning to an interesting-looking series
I've sat on this book for a couple years, waiting to get my hands on the rest of the trilogy before reading it. I found it to be a fun book, fast paced and quite well-written for a first effort. While it did follow the "standard plot" for a sword & sorcery-type fantasy novel pretty much down the line, it did so in an entertaining manner and with enough detours and differences to make it interesting.

Karigan G'ladheon has been expelled from school for, basically, winning a duel against a young nobleman. Rather than wait in shame for her father to come and get her, she gathers the bare necessities and sets out on her own to go home. Along the way, she is suddenly accosted by a Green Rider - a member of the King's elite messenger service - who is barely able to stay on his horse due to two black arrows in his back. As he slumps to the ground, he begs Kari to take over his errand, saying that the letter he has must be delivered to the King and is a matter of life and death. He convinces Kari and expires; Karigan is left with his horse (who, yes, she calls simply The Horse at first since the Green Rider had the lack of courtesy of dying before introducing her; once she discovers her steed's name, she uses it. BTW, The Horse's real name is Condor), his greatcoat and his saddlebags, containing some provisions, with no idea of exactly what she is supposed to do. She sets out for Sacor City, where the King lives, and that's when the adventure begins. Because there is a mysterious rider in grey, upon a grey horse (who is known as simply the Grey One or Grey Man through much of the text, in order to preserve the mystery of his identity - and no, I won't tell you THAT!), who will do anything and kill anyone to stop that message. Dark forces and fell magics are stirring to life in Sacordia for the first time in a millennium - and there is no one left who understands enough about magic to hold them at bay.

While some reviewers have felt that the work is derivative and therefore not original, I would disagree. It is true that, as a genre piece, the story does follow a certain ... guideline, I guess is the best term ... to steer its plot. However, I believe that Ms. Britain has admirably created a unique setting for her world and set into motion events that will spill over into the remaining books in the trilogy, providing a satisfactory reading experience for anyone who not only likes the specific genre, but anyone who enjoys a good book. Keep an eye on my reviews in upcoming weeks to see my reviews of the remaining books in the trilogy!

A strong and endearing heroine
This novel is one of the few books that has emotionally touched me. I wouldn't classify this book as entertainment but rather as an experience - an emotional journey with its protagonist that despite the historical setting and the element of magic is so grounded in human realities.

The story is set in pagan times when the tension between the Brits and the Irish was just brewing. Amidst this political tension is a far greater force - the spirit world of the Irish forest that plays with the lives of seven gifted siblings. Sorcha is the seventh daughter of a seventh son and she possesses the power of healing. When her widowed father marries the mysterious lady Oonagh her brothers are turned into swans and Sorcha has to save them by weaving shirts of the poisonous starwort plant that stings and disfigures her hands. Most importantly she cannot speak until she finishes her task.

This novel is Sorcha's story. It recounts the hardships she faced alone in the forest. The terrible experience of loneliness, of privation and abuse that makes the reader suffer with her (I cried on three occasions). However it also recounts Sorcha's fateful discovery of love in the most unlikely place and is therefore a tender love story of two people who have to reconcile their loyalties and let fate take its course.

The only flaw I found in the book is that with so much sorrow and challenges imposed upon the protagonists, the novel ends like a traditional fairy tale on a happy note. I found it difficult to accept. However this element can be forgiven as the novel also ends with a lot of questions about the other characters. Who is the mysterious figure lurking in Sorcha's vision? Where has Finbar (her brother) gone? Will Diarmid and Cormack return? What of the lady Oonagh?

I found this book difficult to put down and contradictorily wanted to prolong the reading experience and get to the end at the same time. It's one of the best books I have read and would recommend it to all. Can't wait to read the second book. Too bad it's not available in my country.

I actually loved this book. It was one of those books that I found it nearly impossible to put down and I was left feeling bereft when it ended. Set in ancient Ireland, the tale weaves together elements of magic, folktales, and history. Her main character, Sorcha, is the daughter of Lord Colum, and sister to six brothers. When the father brings home a new stepmother for the children, chaos ensues. The stepmother is described as almost unequivocally evil, and capable of great magic. That might, in fact, be my one criticism - her character was not only evil, it was a little flat. I don't hink that detracted from the book at all, and I suspect we may learn more of her in the following two books.

The family is pitted against the people from the British Isles, and there is enough strife and conflict in here to have anyone hurriedly flipping pages. The book is also sad in many ways, but redemptive. I can't wait to read the sequels. If you like folk or fairy tales or historical novels in any way, read this book.

Sorcha is the seventh child with six older brothers. When an enchantress places a spell over her brothers and turns them into swans only Sorcha can help. This story can be heartbreaking at times, but turns out great. There are two other books in the series. Try Juliet Marillier's other books too.

Very Entertaining Read
I have read several of Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar books and while I don't think that this one was quite as good as those, I did find it very entertaining. It kind of reminded me of a romance novel set in a fantasy world. The story is unique and interesting and I thought that the character development was very good. It's not my new favorite but it's definitely worth a read if you like this kind of thing.

Fairy Godmothers in a new light
If you have ever wondered where Fairy Godmothers came from, or whether or not they had private lives, if you've ever wondered what capricious energies are set in motion when Tradition is flouted as Fairy Tales go wrong, you will enjoy this charming, inventive, and enjoyable tale. Mercedes Lackey hits her stride as a writer in these wacky fairy tales (Tales of the Five Hundred Kingdoms series ) with gentle humor, good natured intelligence, and an engaging romantic subplot. As usual with Mercedes Lackey, there is a lot of thundering action between the good and bad guys, and it is clear her fairy tale universe has many, many more tales to unfold. The romance is a little more graphic than is usual with Mercedes, but less than in many current romance novels.

Elena should have had a life like Cinderella, but things don't quite work out and she ends up looking for work. Elena's fairy godmother then takes her on as an apprentice and the adventure begins! There is a nice romance slipped in and plenty of laughs as well. A fun twist to the classic fairy tale. There are more books in this series.

First of all, I noticed that several people have mentioned that they think the plot is "dull" or "slow". That is their personal opinion. And this is mine: the plot is far from slow. Perhaps it doesn't jump into the battles and flee-for-your-life scenes that quite a few recent fantasy books do, but this isn't your average fantasy novel - it's more along the lines of Tolkien's masterpieces: rich, with vivid characters and landscapes and with an underlying culture and history that peeks through the pages.
I won't go into detail about the book's plot: why should I? The professional reviews are at the top of the page, and everyone else's synopsis is down here as well. That should be enough for you. I'm merely here to tell you that I found this book to be a wonderful read that I could not put down - both times I've read it. True, some of the basic plot elements are the same as many other mainstream fantasy novels (again, look at the professional reviews up top), but Croggon writes well and with real, see-able compassion, and her characters are real and complex. I recommend it to you; please, read it. You'll probably be a better person for it (?), and if not that, have a glimpse of what, in my eyes, is a real fantasy novel. - Notice the "in my eyes"; this is my personal opinion, and yours may differ from mine. Still, try it. You may find that you like it just as much as I do.

Maerad (main character) is interesting and the story is great too. It has a classic stoyline with plenty of twists to spice it up. There are three more books in the quartet. The last one comes out this September.

There are, of course, differences in Croggon's handling of these elements, as well as her choice of a female protagonist. An Australian poet, she makes good use of imagery in her writing.
